The DOI registration agency DatCite has published interviews with representatives of LMU Munich and TU Dortmund regarding the results of the implementation of practical guidelines for DataCite DOI metadata recommendations through two pilot programs aimed at improving workflows within respective systems.
The University of Munich has developed and published an updated version of the DataCite Metadata Generator, a web tool that allows the creation of new DOI metadata files within the DataCite metadata schema, as well as the modification of existing metadata files in XML and JSON formats. This tool is intended to spread the use of the recommendations summarized in the DataCite Best Practice Guide, which further specifies the recommendations within the DataCite documentation and the Best Practice recommendations of the DataCite registration agency itself.

The Dortmund example focused on improving the use and handling of ROR and ORCID identifiers within their DSpace repository. The development of the expanded Dortmund repository functionalities took place as part of open-source development, and the new solutions were included in the DSpace 10.0 version, which was released in May 2026. The improved workflows and procedures used to achieve this better transfer of accurate and machine-readable FAIR metadata from DSpace systems to the DataCite infrastructure will thus be available to the wider community.
