Beyond Authorship: Partnering with the Publishing Community to Recognize Peer Review Service

ORCID has launched a collaboration with Springer Nature, Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Sage on a new initiative called Peer Review Recognition. Its goal is to ensure that researchers’ peer review activities are automatically and consistently recorded directly in their ORCID records.

Peer review is an essential part of the scholarly process, yet it has long remained a “hidden” activity — difficult to document and rarely visible in a researcher’s professional record. The Peer Review Recognition initiative changes this: publishers will write peer review records directly to ORCID records as validated items marked with a Trust Marker. This indicator signals that the data was added directly by an authoritative ORCID member organization — not manually by the researcher themselves.

What this means for researchers:

  • Peer review activity will be automatically visible in the ORCID record without manual entry
  • Records will be marked with a Trust Marker as validated directly by the publisher
  • Researchers retain control over the visibility of this data

What this means for institutions and publishers:

  • Standardisation of peer review data and broader availability
  • Reduced administrative burden
  • Greater transparency supporting research integrity

The initiative is open to additional publishers and partners. More information is available on the ORCID blog.
