ORCID Expands Work Typology

ORCID is expanding its work typology, opening up new possibilities particularly for researchers in the humanities. You can now add outputs such as musical compositions, visual and audio materials, or teaching objects to your ORCID profile. This update makes it easier to accurately classify research outputs and provides greater clarity during the process of adding them.

The new work types were developed in collaboration with the community and are based on the terminology maintained by the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR). This ensures that they are internationally interoperable and sustainable over the long term. The changes also include refinements to existing categories to make them clearer and better aligned with user needs.

ORCID member organizations can add these new types of data to records via API 3.0 or higher. This reduces the administrative burden on researchers while enhancing data reliability thanks to direct institutional support.

The typology has been expanded to include 13 new types of outputs, which can be added manually to ORCID profiles or via the Member API. Existing categories have been refined, with some merged for improved clarity. Work types with low usage, such as spin-off companies, have been deprecated but remain available through the API.
