You can start using the services of the DOI National Center at any time during the calendar year. The operation of the services is governed by the Policy of the National DOI Centre.
Would you like to start using the services of the National DOI Center? If so, there are a few steps to take:
First, make sure that your institution meets the basic requirements for using NC DOI services:
- You represent an institution of higher education, research or other non-profit organization active in science, research and innovation located in the Czech Republic.
- Your organisation produces research data, datasets and other research results in the course of its activities and assigns or plans to assign them DOIs.
- Your organisation has a system where you can start assigning DOIs to research results (e.g. a repository).
- Your organisation is prepared to ensure the persistence (permanence) of the registered DOIs, i.e. to keep the URL of the object’s information – its metadata and location – up-to-date in the long term.
- Your organisation is prepared to ensure that DOIs are registered with correct and sufficient metadata.
If you would like to start using the National DOI Center’s services or learn more about them, contact us at doi@techlib.cz. We will arrange a meeting (online or in person) where we will discuss everything necessary regarding your needs in relation to using the NC DOI services.
You will then go through the following list of questions to clarify your institution’s situation and needs, which we will then discuss together:
- What do you plan to use the DOI for? What types of research results do you plan to assign DOIs to (datasets, articles, software, etc.)?
- In what systems/repositories will you use/integrate the DOI (repository, CRIS system, etc.)? For whom is the system intended?
- Approximately how many DOIs do you plan to allocate (per year)?
- Do you plan to register DOIs manually, via API or via a platform where the use of DOIs is already integrated (see list of supported platforms)?
- Does your institution assign DOIs through the registration agency Crossref?
- What is the structure of your organisation? Does it have furhter sub-organization levels?
- Are you planning to register DOIs for other institutions? Who is responsible for the content you plan to assign DOIs to?
Trying out the DataCite Fabrica test environment
In order to allow you to try how DOI allocation through DataCite works, we will set up access to the test environment. Here you will be able to go through the entire workflow in the DataCite Fabrica web environment: from creating records, filling in of the metadata to registering and publishing a test DOI.
NOTE: Anyone, not just institutions interested in DOI National Center services, can get access to the test environment.
Familiarization with the member obligations before starting to use the services
In the next step your institution should make sure you have:
- tested out the manual assigning of DOIs / optionally also via the API using your DataCite test account (all steps of the process, including creating a repository, prefix, assigning DOIs and redirecting DOIs to their respective “landing pages”),
- assigned a main contact person for the National DOI Centre,
- assigned a main technical contact person for the National DOI Centre,
- made sure that you plan to assign DOIs only to research results for which your institution is responsible,
- familiarized yourselves with the Policy of the National DOI Center (https://doi.org/10.48813/tzna-5j34).
Maintaining of Landing pages
One of your institution’s responsibilities is to set up and maintain “landing pages” – permanent and publicly accessible pages to which the DOI will link – for each DOI you assign. The “landing pages” must contain metadata and other relevant information about the digital object according to DataCite Best Practice:
- It contains a full bibliographic citation of the item, so users can confirm they have located the correct item.
- It includes the DOI displayed as a URL.
- It provides information about the accessibility of the object
- It provides copyright information and further description of the object
- The DOI is appropriately tagged in the code for the page.
Furthermore, your institution must ensure that the metadata of your registered DOIs conform to the DataCite metadata schema (https://schema.datacite.org/), at least version 4.3.) and that your institution is prepared to make best efforts to maintain access and update the “landing pages” of the content to which it has assigned a DOI even after it ceases to use DataCite services or ceases to manage the content for any reason.
Unavailable content and Tombstone pages
For DOIs assigned to content that will be deleted or otherwise no longer available, your institution will edit the DOI metadata and provide a “tombstone page” with similar information to a “landing page” including information about why the DOI is no longer functional.
Signing of the membership contract and subsequent introductory training
In the final step to start using the services of the National DOI Center, your organization has to sign a contract with NTK. (A sample contract is available in the NTK Institutional Repository: https://doi.org/10.48813/f7r6-xy34). Please read the text of the contract carefully and familiarize yourself with the membership obligations that arise from it.
Contract information questionnaire
To prepare the contract, please fill in the details for your institution via this questionnaire: https://www.techlib.cz/cs/84727-udaje-ke-smlouvam-o-zajisteni-sluzeb-datacite
Once the contracts are signed, we will conduct an introductory training session for the responsible staff at your institution and remain available for any further support.
