How is ROR different from other organization identifiers?
Unlike other registries, ROR is non-commercial and completely open. All ROR data is released into the public domain (CC0), meaning anyone can use it for free and integrate it into their systems without any conditions
How long does it take to create or modify a ROR ID?
Processing a request for a new ROR ID or a change takes 4 to 6 weeks. However, the duration may vary depending on the complexity of the requested changes or the current volume of requests being handled by ROR curators.
We have completed an organizational merger and now have a new ROR ID. How will this change affect data discoverability?
According to ROR documentation, it is recommended not to change the ROR ID for research outputs produced before the merger. Since the ROR ID is a persistent identifier, the IDs of the original organizations remain discoverable; however, they are marked in the metadata with ‘inactive’ and ‘predecessor’ labels. These records then link to the ‘successor’ organization—the ROR ID of the newly formed entity (which, in turn, links back to its predecessors).
When working with citation databases such as Web of Science or Scopus, it is necessary to use the new ROR ID. However, when searching for an organization’s total output, it is important to keep in mind that older works will still be linked to the original IDs.
What are the recommendations for displaying the ROR logo?
Rules for using the ROR logo can be found in the ROR documentation.
Is it possible to create a ROR ID for a faculty?
No, it is not. ROR strives to keep the connection between research outputs and organizations as simple as possible. For this reason, lower-level organizational units (faculties, departments) fall outside the scope of ROR. Parent organizations are much more stable, making them better candidates for persistent identifiers. On the other hand, ROR does allow the creation of IDs for research infrastructures and laboratories.
