Register once, use repeatedly: Portugal’s FCT shows how to use ORCID effectively

Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) is the Portuguese national agency for the funding of science and research. It supports research projects, scientific institutions and infrastructure, as well as education and knowledge transfer. FCT has developed an integrated information ecosystem called PTCRIS, designed to strengthen national scientific activities. The system supports interlinking data across the research lifecycle and ensures repeated data use without the need for duplication – by using researcher identifiers such as ORCID.

Key points:

  • Between 2020 and 2024, the share of Portuguese researchers with an ORCID iD grew to approximately 80%
  • This growth wasn’t achieved through mandatory policies. Rather, FCT promoted ORCID as a helpful tool that saves time and reduces administrative overhead when applying for grants.
  • According to FCT estimates, ORCID usage saved Portuguese researchers around 154 hours annually.

A presentation on how ORCID is integrated into the PTCRIS system was given at NTK in June 2024 by Cátia Laranjeira, manager of PTCRIS.
