ORCID Introduces Researcher Connect

ORCID has launched a new feature called Researcher Connect, designed to help universities and research institutions more effectively link their internal systems with researchers’ ORCID records. This service automatically identifies researchers who have a verified institutional email address on their ORCID record but have not yet connected their ORCID iD with the institution’s integration.

Researcher Connect enables institutions to automatically locate researchers who:

  • have a verified institutional email on their ORCID record,
  • have not yet connected their ORCID iD to the institutional system (e.g., CRIS), and
  • have not received a Researcher Connect notification from the institution within the past year.

These researchers then receive a notification in their ORCID inbox (and an email, depending on their settings) directing them to the institution’s ORCID landing page, where they can easily authorize the connection.

Key Benefits:

  • Identify unconnected researchers – automatically, without additional IT burden.
  • Update affiliations – institutions can add employment affiliations directly to a researcher’s ORCID record after connection.
  • Improve data quality – verified affiliations appear as a trust marker in the researcher’s ORCID record.
  • Save time – reduces manual data entry for both researchers and administrators.
  • Minimal technical effort – only a functioning integration capable of writing affiliations and a maintained ORCID landing page are required.

What institutions need:

  • a working ORCID integration capable of writing affiliation data,
  • a list of institutional email domains,
  • a clear and informative ORCID landing page explaining the benefits and offering a “Connect with ORCID” button.
