ORCID and DataCite: Increasing the Visibility of Research Outputs

ORCID and DataCite have highlighted how linking persistent identifiers can help increase the visibility and impact of research outputs. During a webinar held as part of International Love Data Week, the two organizations presented practical ways to connect ORCID iDs with DOIs registered through DataCite.

One of the key features is ORCID auto-update. When a researcher uses their ORCID iD while submitting a dataset or another research output to a DataCite member repository and grants the necessary permissions, the output can be automatically added to their ORCID record. This significantly reduces the need for manual data entry and ensures that research outputs are correctly linked to their creators.

DOIs registered through DataCite make it possible to uniquely identify and register many types of research outputs, not only traditional publications. These include datasets, software and code, images, posters, and even physical samples. By linking these outputs to an ORCID iD, a broader network of persistent identifiers (the PID Graph) is created, helping to better map research activities across the global research information ecosystem.
